Mushroom Memories Light the Corners of My Mind

My birthday was last month and Facebook decided to share a memory. A mushroom memory, which was a little helpful because I had been trying to figure out when I started collecting. According to my post, I bought the Merry Mushrooms cookie jar to add to my collection back in May 2011. I know by that point, I already had several pieces, including the catalyst for this journey- the smooth canister set that was a Christmas gift from my parents.

Things really started cooking in 2013. In January 2013, my friend Sarah reminded me that eBay existed and I found a veritable trove of treasures. My astonishment at the variety preserved in the comments is charming now that I know there are 250+ pieces.

By March 2013, the obsession escalated quickly, and our kitchen was redecorated base on Merry Mushrooms. I remember buying the mushroom print and coordinating stripe fabric to make the curtains and valances, having the light green and orange stripe colors matched for paint. Sadly, we have moved twice since then and no longer have such a funky colored kitchen, though we have more mushrooms to make up for it.

The last Merry Mushrooms post was also in March 2013, when I announced I found two of the hanging planters at the new Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Milwaukee's Third Ward (sadly, it's closed now). I remember that day distinctly and that I paid $2 each. Can you believe it?
